Vorige week heeft de VNC een nieuw position paper verstuurd naar betrokken politici en beleidsmakers in Den Haag. Met dit document brengen wij onze visie op actuele luchtvaartdossiers onder de aandacht en laten wij zien wat volgens ons nodig is om veiligheid, werkgelegenheid en goede arbeidsomstandigheden voor cabinepersoneel te beschermen.

Wat is een position paper?
Een position paper is een beleidsdocument waarin standpunten en voorstellen helder op papier worden gezet. Het is bedoeld als inhoudelijke basis voor gesprekken met Kamerleden, ministeries en andere betrokken partijen. Politieke besluiten over luchtvaart raken direct ons werk aan boord. Door onze praktijkervaring te vertalen naar concrete aanbevelingen zorgen wij dat de stem van cabinepersoneel wordt meegenomen in beleid en wetgeving.

Inzet van de VNC richting politiek
De VNC gebruikt position papers als onderdeel van bredere belangenbehartiging. Naast cao-overleg en contact met werkgevers voeren wij ook gesprekken in Den Haag. Onze inbreng komt rechtstreeks van de werkvloer: bestuurders en actieve leden vliegen zelf en weten wat beleid in de praktijk betekent. Dat maakt onze bijdrage realistisch, concreet en gebaseerd op dagelijkse ervaring.

Belangrijke thema’s in dit document
In dit position paper benadrukt de VNC dat vliegveiligheid mensenwerk is. Veiligheid hangt niet alleen af van techniek, maar ook van goed opgeleide en beschermde professionals in de cabine. Daarom pleiten wij voor wettelijke certificering, heldere fatigueprocedures en betere borging van veilige arbeidsomstandigheden, ook bij agressie en medische incidenten.

Daarnaast vragen wij aandacht voor eerlijke concurrentie in Europa. Constructies die sociale premies of werknemersrechten onder druk zetten, tasten luchtvaartbanen en Nederlandse werkgelegenheid aan.

Ook de toekomst van Schiphol en het luchtvaartbeleid komt aan bod. Verduurzaming is noodzakelijk, maar maatregelen moeten effectief zijn. Een sterk oplopende vliegbelasting kan leiden tot uitwijkgedrag naar het buitenland, met verlies van banen als gevolg. Europese afstemming en gerichte investering in innovatie en duurzame brandstoffen zijn volgens de VNC effectiever.

Tot slot vragen we aandacht voor de luchtkwaliteit in de cabine. Omdat er nog belangrijke vragen onbeantwoord zijn over de mogelijke effecten van zogenoemde cabin air events, pleiten wij voor verder onderzoek en actieve Nederlandse betrokkenheid bij Europese normontwikkeling.

Versterking van ons vak
Dit position paper gaat over onderwerpen die direct invloed hebben op het dagelijkse werk en de toekomst van cabinepersoneel, zoals:

• veilige werkomstandigheden aan boord
• bescherming van arbeidsvoorwaarden en sociale rechten
• duurzame inzetbaarheid
• behoud van werkgelegenheid in Nederland

Met dit document maken wij aan politiek duidelijk waar de VNC voor staat en welke keuzes volgens ons nodig zijn om ons vak toekomstbestendig te houden. Zo zorgen wij dat beslissingen over luchtvaart niet losstaan van de praktijk in de cabine.

VNC Brings Position Paper to the Attention of Policymakers in The Hague

Last week, the VNC sent a new position paper to relevant politicians and policymakers in The Hague. With this document, we highlight our perspective on current aviation issues and outline what we believe is needed to safeguard safety, employment and good working conditions for cabin crew.

What is a position paper?
A position paper is a policy document in which viewpoints and proposals are clearly set out. It serves as a substantive basis for discussions with Members of Parliament, ministries and other stakeholders. Political decisions on aviation directly affect our work on board. By translating our practical experience into concrete recommendations, we ensure that the voice of cabin crew is reflected in policy and legislation.

The VNC’s engagement with policymakers
The VNC uses position papers as part of its broader advocacy efforts. In addition to collective labour agreement negotiations and engagement with employers, we also hold discussions in The Hague. Our input comes directly from the workplace: board members and active members themselves fly and understand what policy means in practice. This makes our contribution realistic, concrete and grounded in day-to-day experience.

Key themes in this document
In this position paper, the VNC emphasises that aviation safety is ultimately about people. Safety depends not only on technology, but also on well-trained and properly protected professionals in the cabin. We therefore advocate statutory certification, clear fatigue procedures and stronger safeguards for safe working conditions, including in cases of aggression and medical incidents.

We also draw attention to fair competition in Europe. Practices that put pressure on social security contributions or workers’ rights undermine aviation jobs and employment in the Netherlands.

The future of Schiphol and wider aviation policy are also addressed. Sustainability is essential, but measures must be effective. A sharply increasing aviation tax may lead to passengers choosing to travel via airports abroad, resulting in job losses. According to the VNC, European coordination and targeted investment in innovation and sustainable fuels are more effective approaches.

Lastly, we highlight cabin air quality. As important questions remain about the potential effects of so-called cabin air events, we call for further research and active Dutch involvement in the development of European standards.

Strengthening our profession
This position paper addresses issues that directly impact the daily work and future of cabin crew, such as:

• safe working conditions on board
• protection of employment terms and social rights
• sustainable employability
• safeguarding employment in the Netherlands

With this document, we make clear to policymakers what the VNC stands for and which choices we believe are necessary to keep our profession future-proof. In doing so, we ensure that decisions on aviation remain closely connected to the reality in the cabin.
